Classrooms & Labs
JM&C has three Mac classrooms in addition to the Creightonian Newsroom where students can work on projects, interact with faculty, and collaborate with their peers. All department computers run a full complement of software including Office, Adobe Creative Suite, Apple Final Cut Studio, and various applications for software development, statistical analysis and communications. All computers are also equipped with HD video screens for developing and editing digital media.
Murphy Media Lab
The Murphy Media lab (Hitchcock 205) is outfitted with 16 Mac Pros connected to our network storage and rendering farm with high-speed fiber optics and dual ethernet connections. Each has the power to simultaneously edit multiple 1080 HD video streams over the network or render complex 3D models. The Murphy Media lab adds Maya Ultimate Edition to the standard software installation, and Wacom tablets at every workstation.
The Hitchcock lab (Hitchcock 204) contains 22 iMac student workstations ready for coding, graphics, digital media or writing. Workstations are arranged “in the round” to foster student collaboration and faculty interaction.
The new, multi-purpose Development lab (Hitchcock 207) contains 17 iMac student workstations. These lab machines largely utilize open source software that students are able to download and install on their own machines for work outside of class.
The Newsroom adds another 11 computers for students to work on projects outside of class. Additionally, offices for Professors Guthrie, Reed and Wierman are located within the Newsroom, making it easy for students to get instruction throughout the day.
Servers and Learning Environment
JM&C has the most sophisticated digital learning environment on campus, with it’s own network room with stacks of servers providing a few dozen Terabytes of network storage.
Network based accounts allow our students to fully customize their personal learning experience, meaning no matter where they sit, their settings and desktop follow them through all of our labs and classrooms.
Our Final Cut Server is highly customized for Creighton students and organizations, making it easy for students to check out digital media to their laptops. Studio Blue and the Creightonian can also use Final Cut Server to keep track of projects, and their deadlines as they approach.
